Release Date: May 3, 2012
The Historic Roanoke City Market has secured two grants that will fund a double up program for SNAP customers. The SNAP/EBT program, formerly known as food stamps, has been offered at the Market since last season. The procurement of these grants will allow customers to receive one free SNAP dollar token for every SNAP dollar token they purchase. These tokens will be matched up to $50. The Carilion Clinic has granted $5000 to the Market for this endeavor because it follows their mission of promoting healthy communities. Also Foundation for Roanoke Valley has granted $2500 for the double up program. Conjointly this grant has an additional $2500 for a “bruised produce” project that will deliver Saturday’s end of day produce to a local shelter. More information can be found about the double up program at www.downtownroanoke.org/city-market/ebt-and-credit-card-program
EBT cards can be used to purchase tokens for eligible items during the following hours:
Saturday: 9:00am-2:00pm on the Market
Monday-Friday: 8:00am-4:30pm, available on demand in the DRI office at 213 Market Street (elevator entrance on the corner of Market St. and Kirk Ave.)
To further fundraising efforts, the City Market is launching a new campaign, Friends of the Farmers Market. This program will allow supporters of the Market to sponsor at different levels and receive items such as a market t-shirt, “Produce of the Seasons box”, an Apple Pickin’ Farm Tour, etc. depending on their donation level. This effort will not only sustain the Market but also provide signage and beautification in the future. Sean Luther, President and CEO of Downtown Roanoke, Inc., says, “the Market is a major regional asset, the Friends of the Farmers Market Campaign provides an opportunity for the community to support its mission, support local agriculture in a farm-to-table outlet and preserve its unique history.” Donations will be handled in partnership with the Roanoke Foundation for Downtown and are tax deductible.
