On July 1st The Market Gallery opens a varied, masterful show featuring five mature artists working in four different mediums. Anne Way Bernard's almost 3-dimensional oil landscapes of the Southwest Virginia countryside include high contrast in values, layering, and loose brushwork. Using the hillside behind her studio as inspiration, Nancy Dahlstrom's recent work explores etching and printing possibilities to produce a series of one-of-a-kind monoprints. The colorful crystalline glazes of Steve Mitchell's porcelain vases and bowls resemble the polished surfaces of cowry and olive shells. Last but not least are the wall sculptures that mother-and-daughter artists Barbara Norman-Lashley and Kim Lashley-Sutliff create from recycled books, wood, and other materials.
