City Market SaturdaysKick Off in Downtown Roanoke on Saturday, Apr. 6
City Market at the Riverto be held every Thursday in June and July at River’s Edge Sports complex
ROANOKE, Va. (April 2, 2013) — It’s no secret that local flavors make a terrific addition to any meal. There is also a certain amount of delight when the cook says, “I found the best ingredients at the local market.”
Sat., Apr. 6, marks the official opening of The Historic Roanoke City Market’s season with City Market Saturdays, sponsored by Haley Toyota. The City Market is located in the heart of Downtown Roanoke at the intersection of Campbell Avenue and Market Street. The Historic Roanoke City Market started in 1882 is the oldest continuously operating open-air market in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
As in years past, The Market brings an enticing array of farm fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, and plants during the annual growing season for Roanokers, their families and friends, and tourists, to enjoy. The market even boasts a variety of fresh meats—all from local farms. The Historic Roanoke City Market is managed by Downtown Roanoke, Inc. (DRI). There are approximately 40 weekend vendors at the downtown City Market this year, as well as 10 daily vendors.
Tracie Hughes, DRI’s Market Manager, said, “After such a long winter, we’re delighted to bring a taste of spring to the City Market on our first day. Our vendors are ready to welcome shoppers with early spring produce, fresh meats, flowers and plants. We know shoppers and visitors alike will enjoy the array of offerings—including our local artisans and their handcrafted items, jewelry, and other art objects that are for sale.”
Two additional features are underway as part of the City Market program this year. First, Downtown Roanoke Inc. and the City of Roanoke are in the process of cleaning the market structure, applying a fresh coat of paint and replacing the existing awnings with a new durable and attractive material. New lights will be installed as well.
Second, after much success with last year’s City Market at the Kirk Family YMCA, this season’s pop-up market, City Market at the River, will be held every Thursday in June and July from 4 to 7 p.m. at River’s Edge Sports Complex, along Wiley Drive between Jefferson Street and Franklin Street. The City Market at the River will feature fresh, local produce, grass fed beef, pork and more. New this year, customers will be able to purchase grab-and-go grilled items featuring City Market goodies.
City Market Vendors—whether downtown or at River’s Edge—are trusted food sources and are always on site to answer any questions about their products. Everything sold in the market area has been certified as “locally grown,” meaning the fresh, quality products are not treated with chemicals and preservatives. Each day, the products sold at the Roanoke City Market arrive fresh from a local farm that’s been inspected and approved as meeting all Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services agricultural requirements and health and sanitation codes.
In addition to food and handcrafted art, City Market Saturdays will showcase a variety of entertainment every Sat. from Apr. 6 – Sept. 28. This entertainment is made possible from support by Haley Toyota and includes live entertainment, cooking demonstrations from downtown chefs, “How-to" Workshops, street performers, family days, and much more.
The first entertainment event on Apr. 6 includes a Child-Friendly Cooking Demo from the Virginia Cooperative Extension (12 noon to 1 pm) and music by Tenured Soul (11 am to 2 pm). All activities are free and take place on the City Market from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Visit DRI’s website to see the entire line-up and make plans to attend: www.downtownroanoke.org/city-market/haley-toyota-city-market-saturdays
The Historic Roanoke City Market shops and restaurants are open year-round, seven days a week, and close only on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. It has been recognized as a "Great American Public Place" by the Lyndhurst Foundation along with other winners like the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC and Central Park in New York City. Locally, the market receives many "Best of Roanoke" awards by readers of The Roanoker magazine.
City Market Vendor (Downtown) Hours
The City Market hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Many vendors use Sunday, Monday and Tuesday for planting, picking, and preparing items for sale. In growing season, many vendors are on the Market around 7:00 a.m. and leave around 3:00 p.m.
City Market Vendor at the River Hours
The City Market at the River hours are every Thursday, June 6 – July 25, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
When coming to the downtown City Market, remember to use PARK Noke, the downtown parking app that lets people see where they can park, availability, and the cost before they head out the door. The app is available as a free download in the App Store and can be found under the Navigation and Travel categories. The app can also be found on DRI’s web site at https://www.downtownroanoke.org/parking/park-noke.
