The Historical Society of Western Virginia invites you to join us at “History Is Served,” our annual event, held September 18, 2025 at Hotel Roanoke.
The evening features New York Times journalist and author Andrew Lawler, who will speak on his new book "A Perfect Frenzy: A Royal Governor, His Black Allies, and the Crisis that Spurred the American Revolution."
Lawler, author of the national bestseller "The Secret Token," about the lost colony of Roanoke, and the award-winning "Under Jerusalem," has written more than a thousand newspaper and magazine articles for, among many others, the New York Times, Washington Post, National Geographic, and Smithsonian. He is a contributing writer for Science and contributing editor for Archaeology magazines. Coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, his new book offers a striking new perspective that reorients our understanding of the Revolution’s causes, highlights the radically different motivations between patriots in the North and South, and reveals the seeds of the nation’s racial divide, placing Virginia at its center.
The “History Is Served” evening includes a Cash Bar reception at 5:30, a sit-down dinner at 7, and Silent and Live auctions throughout the evening. This dinner is the Society’s major fundraising event. Its proceeds enable us to offer educational programming and exhibits at the Roanoke History and the O. Winston Link Museum jointly located in the historic passenger station near Hotel Roanoke.
