Local artist, teacher and musician Jimmy Deck has created a miniature world, Steamer’s Point, inspired by the photographs of O.Winston Link. A sampling of photographs of those works will go on display Jan. 23 and run through May 5 at the O. Winston Link Museum-History Museum of Western Virginia.
As Deck explains on the Steamer’s Point website, “thirty years of teaching high school art, doing freelance commercial art, painting and design was just the training I needed. I now play with toys.”
Deck's manipulation of light, paired with the atmosphere of an Edward Hopper painting, create larger than life photographs from small scale scenes, notes museum curator Ashley Webb who chose “Light & Shadow” as the title for the exhibit. She also promises visitors will have an opportunity to try their hands at creating a miniature scene.
Deck’s project began after he and a buddy bought the model train contents of a local basement. Some they sold, and the rest is at Deck’s home where he is building Steamer’s Point, one scene at a time, and also writing a story to go with it.
