Join us at The Market Gallery for our ArtbyNight opening reception for Ryan Gerstemeier, Rod Adams, and Gina Louthian-Stanley.
In contrasting mediums and modes, the three Featured Artists explore the effects--and the idea--of light and shadow. Gerstemeier’s naturalistic oil Roman Evening presents the nuance and drama of the myriad shades of slanting darks cast by late-day sun on old buildings, shuttered casement windows, and the cars parked beneath them. At first, Adams’s watercolors of rural scenes look pretty traditional—until we notice how his boogie-woogie brushwork animates the patinas on an old Ford truck and the tiny shadows rippling through the grass and bare winter branches. Finally in her small Shadow-Play encaustics, Gina Louthian-Stanley visits Surrealist territory, depicting human figures—and hands—that cast animal shadows suggesting alternate, subconscious patterns of being beyond civilizing constraints.
The show hangs from March 3rd —28th. Exhibiting contemporary Southwest Virginia artists, The Market Gallery is located on Roanoke’s historic downtown market, at 23 Salem Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24011.
